Why would you attend?

The purpose of this photography course is to rapidly transform your photography skills from a place of knowing absolutely nothing. You don't need any prior experience or photography knowledge to take this course. You only need a digital camera that can shoot in manual mode and 99% of all cameras can, including your mobile phone! You'll learn about photography during the day and night, bring a little tripod for this course!

Travel Photography During The Day And Night

We'll start this course 2 hours before sunset and finish during the night. You'll learn about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance and controlling the light. Then at night you'll learn about long exposures, light painting, using your tripod and hand held night photography. We’ve spent countless hours on the streets of Melbourne discovering secret laneways, rooftops and ever changing street art. Our focus is on your photography education, as opposed to site seeing, but you’ll be taken to some of coolest “off the beaten track” photographic hot spots in Melbourne. Travel photography for us is all about learning how to use your camera with a minimal amount of gear, being discreet, thinking quickly, finding unique subjects, capturing the moment and documenting your environment with an artistic eye.

Become A Culturally Respectful Person... And Photographer.

Daniel has travelled to over 60 countries and has learnt through experience about how to communicate and behave as a photographer in a foreign country. "I've had bananas thrown at me in Africa, undercover military approach me in Tel Aviv Israel, and the Vietnamese army almost took my drone in Hanoi. All of this happened while I thought I was being respectful." Becoming proficient in the technical skills of travel photography is the easy part. Learning about interpersonal communication is what's missing from most people's arsenal. We'll be talking about strategies to help you capture the photographs you may be too nervous to even consider.

You Can Be The Worlds Best Photographer And The Worlds Worst Teacher At The Same Time.

Finding a good teacher has always been something I've struggled with. At school and and university. What makes a good teacher in any subject? I believe it comes down to four things:

1. A proven expert in their field. Emphasis on "proven."

2. The ability to break down complicated subjects into digestible, understandable, logical chunks.

3. Awareness. Identify where their students are struggling in order to apply a fix straight away.

4. Delivery. Patience and finding an appropriate balance between confidence and humility.

Here's what I've learnt from my own personal experience with education. You can be the worlds best expert and the worlds worst teacher at the same time. Talent does not necessarily equate to "quality communicator." And self-aware communication is the key to teaching. I believe that the fastest path to becoming truly proficient in any subject is to teach it. I've been teaching photography since 2011 and have spent considerable time improving my ability to teach you photography effectively.

What If You Could Create Your Own Phenomenal Photographs? And Honestly Take Credit For them?

Today your phone can take absolutely beautiful photographs ... without you really doing anything. Ie find a beautiful sunset and press the shoot button... done. Can you truly take credit for that photograph? Nature has presented itself and you simply framed the image and pressed a button. Wouldn't it be a fulfilling experience to truly know to yourself that you have taken your time to create an image in your own way. Wouldn't it be a nice feeling to take true ownership of your photography? To understand why your photograph looks the way it does and to know that you are the one who intentionally made the decisions create it that way. It's the unique human element that you are providing your viewers. Rather than the generic creation that your phone makes for you... that you pretend is your own.

This Photography Beginners Masterclass Is Aimed At Travellers And Explorers.
The true value of this photography course comes from the immediate feedback you will receive about your own photographs. When you have an expert right by your side you can learn without frustration! Have you ever wondered why your photographs appear too dark or too bright in automatic mode? This is because your camera is “metering” the light without understanding what YOU want to do with the photograph. It makes a mathematic calculation and acts on that. On our photography courses in Melbourne you’ll learn about finding the best light and how to control it so you can see how it changes the look of your images. No more blurry photographs or missing that gorgeous sunset. More importantly, you’ll learn how to use your digital camera in manual mode. Over time we’ve refined our manual mode teaching philosophy again and again. In fact its simplicity is something we’re quite proud of. You’ll learn about shutter speed, aperture, ISO and controlling the light with your camera. Our photography courses in Melbourne are constantly evolving as we discover new hidden photographic hot spots in Melbourne, join us and capture your own unique photographs!

10 March 2020 • The Photography Beginners Masterclass

I loved this course so much! I learnt more in 3 hours than I have in countless hours of reading and re-reading about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance...I did the day to night city walk with Daniel, visiting laneways, the coolest rooftop with amazing city views, bridges and a river sunset. I left the course buzzing - I was so excited to finally feel confident to use manual mode on my camera after a year and a half stuck on automatic mode. There is nothing like hands on learning. Daniel is a great teacher and has a lovely easygoing manner, within minutes he built a rapport where I felt confident that no question I had was too stupid! I highly recommend this course. Thank you Daniel.

I had a great evening getting better acquainted with my camera, thanks to the easy and fun instruction Daniel gave us. We also got to have a cool walking tour of the city on dusk, visiting roof tops and laneways and iconic spots. A great way to spend a Sunday!

26 December 2019 • The Photography Beginners Masterclass

I had been dabbling in the manual mode of my DSLR camera on and off over the years but needed someone to put things in a better perspective for me as it can be so confusing trying to understand all the lingo of aperture, shutter speed, etc and when you tend to just whip out the iPhone for a quick snap, it's easy to forget the world of manual mode on the DSLR. I decided to take the Photography Beginners Masterclass last week and ended up being the only participant so got a full 3.5 hour lesson with Daniel. Daniel broke things down into simple chunks so you could see the effects of using varying iso, aperture and shutter speeds and how one impacts the other. Eventually the penny drops and you wonder why you haven't been using manual mode all the time! Highly recommend a class with DJB Photography School.
